TEC 2004 Program Overview
The Technologically-Enhanced Course Program (TEC) - sponsored by the Office of the Academic Dean and the Center for Academic Technology - provides stipends and hands-on instruction to assist faculty in getting the most out of using technology in their courses.

Deadline EXTENDED: February 5, 2004

CAT is now accepting proposals for the 2004 TEC Program. Those who are selected will learn the ins-and-outs of Blackboard and walk step-by-step through the complete integration of an existing course! To sweeten the pot, they’ll receive a $500 stipend for their efforts! Fill out the online proposal today - the deadline is Monday, February 5, 2004.

Purpose
• Faculty will learn and become comfortable with features and tools within Blackboard
• Faculty will become aware of the enhancement possibilities of technology
• Faculty will share campus-wide the knowledge of academic technology and its applications
• Faculty will create strong, synergistic connections between coursework and the laptop initiative
Outcomes

• An existing course will be redesigned to fully integrate the technological capabilities at SC, rethinking the course from the ground up, making it a integral and robust part of the learning experience
• The redesigned course will be demonstrated to colleagues also involved in the TEC Program
• Faculty will demonstrate the redesigned course and share their experiences with other faculty at a workshop in fall 2004
• Following the course, faculty will evaluate their teaching and their students' learning experiences and report on positive and negative changes experienced as a result of enhancing the course using Blackboard. This written report will be submitted to the Academic Dean and the Center for Academic Technology

Proposal
Details: All proposals must be submitted by February 5, 2004. The selections will be announced by March 1, 2004. You must agree to attend and participate fully in all workshops and meetings between May 17, 2004 and May 28, 2004 (see Project Schedule below for details). You may submit unlimited proposals, but only one proposal submission will be selected per faculty member. Only 2-4 proposals will be selected. Faculty members selected for TEC 2003 are not eligible. The final selections will be made by the Academic Dean and the CAT staff. The proposal form is available at http://cat.sckans.edu/CAT_Forms/TEC-Form.shtm.

February 5 Deadline for proposal submission
March 1 CAT announces the faculty selections
May 17 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: CAT Technology Training Lab
All-day comprehensive hands-on workshop covering the instructor features of the Blackboard software led by CAT staff. Faculty will step through every button in the Control Panel. There will be breaks with refreshments and lunch provided.
May 18 Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Location: CAT Technology Training Lab

All-day comprehensive hands-on workshop. The first half will be spent covering more advanced features of Blackboard (such as quizzes, gradebook and question pools). The second half will consist of demonstrations by (and discussions with) previous TEC Program attendees. There will be breaks with refreshments and lunch provided.
May 19 Faculty will spend personal planning time in preparation for presentation on May 20. Faculty read and view assignments to see how others have utilized technology in their courses (IMOWA content, ASU video series, Bowers material, etc.) to serve as a “jump off” point for their own course purposes. Discipline-specific examples will be used where possible.
May 19

Time: As individually scheduled
Location: CAT Conference Room
1-on-1 planning sessions with CAT staff (approx. 1 hour). Course outcomes, pedagogy and structure will be discussed, and then technology will be applied to the course to enhance its existing direction. Goals will be set and a schedule created for the remaining time.

May 20 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Location: CAT Technology Training Lab
 
Half-day will be spent with faculty presenting their “game plan” for their course to the other members of TEC group. Faculty will share ideas and gain feedback from their peers. Refreshments will be provided.
May 21-27

Flexible schedule during which:

  • Faculty development of course according to plan.
  • Scheduled 1-on-1 meetings between faculty and CAT staff to check progress.
  • Possible advanced multimedia projects with assistance from CAT staff.
  • Hands-on assistance whenever needed.
May 28 Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Location: CAT Technology Training Lab
Final course project due. Faculty give a short demonstration of their course to their colleagues in the TEC Program. There will be breaks with refreshments and lunch provided.
June 30 Faculty will receive stipends in their June monthly paycheck for participating in the TEC Program.
Fall 2004 Faculty give a demonstration of their course and share their experiences to other faculty at a workshop during the fall.
Following course Following the course, faculty will evaluate of their teaching and their students' learning experiences and report on positive and negative changes experienced as a result of enhancing the course using Blackboard. This written report will be submitted to the Academic Dean and the Center for Academic Technology.
