The Accuplacer Academic Assessment Skills Test is used for collecting information about the student's personal academic needs as well as collecting important research information for Southwestern. An interpretation of the Accuplacer scores provided by the people from Accuplacer and from Southwestern's mathematics faculty can be found in by clicking on the appropriate navigation bars on the side..

The Accuplacer Proficiency Statements found on the page called "Scores--Meaning," describe the range of knowledge, skills, and abilities that students receiving a particular score are likely to have. The Statements provide contextual and interpretive information beyond the test score interpretation and course placement.

Not all students will be given the College Mathematics part of the test. The student must score above a certain level on the Elementary Algebra portion of the test to qualify for the College Mathematics section. If the student scores below a certain level on the Elementary Algebra section, they will be given an Arithmetic test in addition to the Elementary Algebra test.

Each test completed by the student was chosen from a group of 120 questions. The TOTAL RIGHT SCORE shows how many of these the student could expect to answer correctly if they had taken a test made up of all 120 questions.

Any test score is an estimate, not an exact measure of the student's skills. The RANGE tells the student how accurate his/her score is. If the student were to take a test a second time, he/she could expect their new score to fall somewhere within the RANGE that is shown.

The PERCENTILE RANK compares the student's score with the scores of typical entering college students who competed tests composed of similar questions. For example, a PERCENTILE RANK of 89 means that the student's score is higher than 89% of the students who completed the test.
