Winfield, Kan., Nov. 20, 2000-SC Biology students Dustin Wilgers, Wichita, Paul Mages, Spearville, and Matt Harris, Valley Center have been awarded separate research grants from the Beta Beta Beta Research Foundation. All three will be presenting the results of their research at the BBB District Convention this spring at the Reis Biological Field Station in Steelville, Missouri.

Dustin Wilgers, son of Kathy Relph, received a grant of $400.00 for the study of the colonization potential of zebra mussels in Kansas. Wilgers is a senior biology major.

Paul Mages, senior biology major, received a grant of $580.00 for the study of the effect of mating experience on the reproductive decisions of female guppies. Mages is the son of Frank and Velda Mages.

Matt Harris, son of Tom and Susan Harris, received a grant of $500.00 for the study of the heatshock proteins in killifish acclimatized to different temperature regimes. Matt is a senior biology major.

Beta Beta Beta is the National Biology Honor Society. Founded in 1922 by four colleges, including Southwestern College, Beta Beta Beta now has over 300 chapters nationwide. The organization is dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study through education and research.

Southwestern College is a private institution granting undergraduate and graduate degrees and is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. More than 1,100 students attend classes at the main Winfield campus or at Professional Studies sites in Winfield and Wichita.
