Taylor
Biology Laboratory - Both of our freshmen biology classes, Botany and
Zoology, are taught in this laboratory. The setup is great for both
conducting experiments and group discussions. One of the hallmarks of our
curriculum is the large opportunity for collaborative research with faculty and
peers. |
 |
 |
Wimmer Biology Laboratory - This
laboratory is the home of several different laboratory classes including Human
Anatomy & Physiology, Comparative Anatomy of the Vertebrates, Animal
Behavior and Ecology. The long lab benches are perfect for displaying
large specimens, growing plants, or observing research animals. |
 |
 |
1st Floor Biology Preparation Room -
Adjacent to the Taylor and Wimmer Laboratories is the biology room.
This area contains some preparatory space and contains extensive space for
housing laboratory equipment and biological specimens. |
 |
 |
Burgess
Biology Laboratory - This room is used by a number of our advanced
laboratory courses including Genetics & Evolution, Cell Biology, Animal
Physiology, and Microbiology. Over the past year, we have purchased over $100,000 of new equipment,
most of which is being utilized to support teaching and research efforts in the
area of cellular and molecular biology. |
 |
2nd Floor Biology Preparatory Room
- Adjacent to the Burgess Biology Laboratory is a preparatory room housing
laboratory equipment and chemicals for use in the advanced biology
courses. |
 |
Constant
Temperature Lab - These environmental control chambers allow Dr. Charlie
Hunter and his students the opportunity to house animals under a variety of
conditions for research purposes. One of the interesting features is a
flow through marine tank containing a number of specimens from the coast
of the Pacific Northwest. A number of student projects in Marine
Biology and Animal Physiology have utilized this state of the art facility. |
 |
 |
Ruth
Warren Abbott Laboratories - This large greenhouse is a terrific resource
for both students and faculty. In addition to providing space for both classroom
and individual student projects, this facility houses a diverse teaching
collection of plants, including the prized orchid collection of retired faculty member,
Max Thompson. Several students that have worked with Max have gone on
to impressive careers in botanical research and floriculture. |
 |
 |
Aquarium Room - This facility is used by faculty member,
Dr. Patrick Ross, and his
students in their investigations on the behavior of guppies and other fish.
Housed in the basement of Mossman Hall, the former home of the
Science Division, this research laboratory contains a large number of aquaria
for housing and observing fish. |
 |
SC Hill - Located
only a few blocks from the back door of the Beech Science Center, this prairie
habitat is utilized as an outdoor laboratory by a number of our courses.
For example, Ecology students are in the midst of a long term study on the
effects of burning on different aspects of the prairie ecosystem. The 30+
acre plot includes a large variety of plant
species from both tall and mixed grass prairie habitat. |
 |
 |
Slate
Creek Wetlands Area - Just to the southwest of Winfield is a unique habitat containing both fresh and salt water wetlands. Several
students and faculty members have conducted research on the diverse array of
animals and plants found in this environment. |
 |
 |
Moore Field Research Station - We have recently received
approval for constructing a field station on a nearby 240 acre tract
of prairie, woodland, and riparian habitat located on Dutch Creek. The
restoration of this area will provide a wonderful learning and research
opportunity for students and faculty. |
