A Tour of the Beech Science Center
& Mabee Laboratory Complex
Common Areas
(Click on each image for a larger view):
 |
Main Lobby - Located on the first floor, these five aquaria form the
centerpiece for the Beech Science Center. Each tank represents a different
continent, including a tank devoted to the fish of Kansas. A word to the
wise, don't dangle your fingers in the tank. Kansas sunfish can be fairly
ferocious. |
 |
 |
Deets Lobby - Housed on the second
floor, this area is heavily used by students for both educational and social
functions. Come by some evening before a Cell Biology exam and you will
find students munching pizza and studying their brains out. If you can
explain the details of the Krebs' Cycle, you may just score a slice of pepperoni
for yourself. |
 |
 |
Oncley Library - A quiet
study area for students and faculty. This room contains computers and
printers for student use as well as abundant information on graduate schools,
summer internships, and careers in science. Also housed within this room
are current issues of science journals carried by Southwestern College's library
or the private libraries of our faculty. Just in case you were wondering,
the chairs are soft enough for a quick nap between classes. |
 |
 |
McNeish
Lecture Hall - Our largest classroom. This facility includes
state-of-the-art multimedia presentation technology that allows faculty and
students to electronically display overheads, photos, videos, computer software,
and web sites. |
 |
Smith Science Education Classroom
- A smaller classroom that allows instructors to utilize traditional lectures
and discussion groups. This room also contains one of several computing
facilities in the Beech Science Center. |
 |
Overstreet
Instrument Room - The fanciest "toys" of the Science Division
are located in this room, including a PCR thermocycler, respirometer,
scintillation detector, osomometer, electronic
physiograph, refrigerated centrifuge, and IR, UV, and NMR
spectrophotometers. Don't worry if you have no idea what any of these
machines are supposed to do, you will after you get here. |
 |
Smith
Conference Room - A comfortable conference room for small discussion based
classes. Coziest chairs in the building. |
 |
 |
Display
Areas - Every year, Southwestern science students are given the
opportunity to display the fruits of their research in the hallways of Beech
Science Center. Many of these students go on to present their research at
state and national scientific meetings such as Kansas Ornithological Society,
Beta Beta Beta Biological Society, Animal Behavior Society, and Society for
Integrative & Comparative Biology. |
