Study Abroad Procedure

Here are the basic steps for study abroad that Southwestern College students should follow.
  1. Select foreign university.  Please note that some schools are better than others. Students are advised to choose well known, internationally recognized institutions such as the University of London, University of Lyons, Queensland University, etc.

  2. Visit foreign university web page to ensure a compatible course of study.

  3. Submit the Study Abroad Form to College Services.

  4. Connect with Southwestern College academic advisor to discuss curriculum plan.

  5. Make an appointment with Southwestern College financial aid to assess aid contributions (see p. 113 of college catalog).

  6. Fill out online application for study abroad student at foreign institution.

  7. Notify financial aid office at Southwestern College of successful admission to foreign school.

  8. Enroll at Southwestern College for Study Away course, 12 hours.

  9. Follow admissions processes for housing and registration at host institution.

  10. Purchase plane ticket and if necessary contact foreign consulate to secure student visa.

  11. Enjoy classes at host institution, make new friends, and learn!

Even while studying abroad, students should stay in contact with their advisor.  Course selection for the following semester at Southwestern College can be done online.

When students return from study abroad they should:

  1. Ask host institution to send a grade report to the Registrar at Southwestern College.

  2. Check with student life to confirm housing arrangements.

  3. Report their academic progress to their academic advisor.
