Programs
Types of Study Abroad Programs
There are thousands of study abroad programs available to students. Below
is a basic categorization of study abroad programs by sponsor:
- Affiliated Programs - Builders Abroad
maintains a list of programs affiliated with Southwestern (coming
soon), that are approved for transfer credit. Students participating
in a Southwestern College affiliated program may use their
Southwestern College financial aid during their period abroad.
Students participating in an affiliated program will pay tuition and
fees, and in some cases room and board, to Southwestern College.
- Approved Programs - Builders Abroad maintains
a list of programs that are approved for transfer
credit but are not affiliated. Students participating in a
Southwestern College approved program may use their state and
federal financial aid, but do not receive any Southwestern College
financial aid during their period abroad. Students participating in
an approved program will pay tuition, fees, room and board to the
organization administering the program, not to Southwestern College.
- Proprietary and Non-Profit Programs and Consortia
-
Non-affiliate and non-approved companies, organizations, and consortia create and
administer their own study abroad programs. These programs
generally offer elements of
total
immersion and
island
programs. Deadlines and costs vary between programs.
- Programs offered through other American Colleges and
Universities - Many universities in the U.S. have their own
study abroad programs which are open to students of other
universities and colleges.
- Programs offered through Foreign Universities
- Many
overseas institutions will provide services that allow American
students to participate in "international" programs. Some may
provide courses in English and ease in credit transfer.
To help with the process of researching study abroad opportunities,
many institutions and organizations have developed on-line search
engines to allow students to explore the realm of study abroad options
