Physlets

Physics Applets, are small flexible Java applets designed for science education.

Blackbody Radiation
Displays the black body radiation curve for temperatures selected by the user.
Damped Simple Harmonic Motion
Demonstrates underdamped, overdamped, and critically damped harmonic oscillators.
The Doppler Effect
Demonstrates both the classical and relativistic Doppler effects.
Superposition of Waves
Demonstrates group and phase velocity of the superposition of two waves.
Optics Bench
Demonstrates the path of rays of light through a lens and reflected off of a mirror.
Ripple Tank
Several sources can be used to demonstrate constructive and destructive interference.
LCR Circuit
Solve an LCR circuit and see the instantaneous voltages across each component as functions of time.
Harmonic Oscillator Energies and Wave Functions
Solutions of the Schroedinger equation for the harmonic oscillator potential.
Finite Square Well Energies and Wave Functions
Solutions of the Schroedinger equation for the finite square well potential.
Time Development of a Quantum Wave Packet
The behavior of a wave packet for several different potentials.

Hydrogen Atom Wave Functions
Plots of the hydrogen atom wave functions.

Physlets, for example the Java applets themselves, are a registered trademark of Wolfgang Christian.

Physlets are written using Java code that runs on Microsoft, Netscape, and Sun browsers. Unfortunately, Physlets require not only a Java enabled browser, but also JavaScript to Java applet communication. Current Macintosh browsers do not support both Java 1.1 and this communication.

The Physlets listed above were obtained from Davidson College's Physlet web site. Davidson is a nationally recognized, highly selective independent liberal arts college located just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, in the town of Davidson. Founded in 1837 by Presbyterians, today it enrolls approximately 1600 men and women.

Physlet problems, the text and associated script, are copyrighted by Prentice Hall, the problem author, or are in the public domain. Unless otherwise noted, the Physlet problems are copyrighted by Prentice Hall.
